Bluebird K4 replica boat now on show.

One of the features of the Goodwood Festival of Speed this year were the three Rolls-Royce powered record breakers, the Schneider Trophy aeroplane, and the Bluebird car which finally took the record in 1935 were both genuine. The K4 Bluebird boat, (the original of which no longer exists) was a reproduction made for Lord March by the Hothouse Movie Effects company, it is reputed to have cost over £35,000.

After the Festival of Speed it was consigned to auction where it was offered at no reserve. There appeared to be no interest, so Don Sidebottom who owns the Lakeland Motror Museum was able to buy it for just £1,000! Don, a great collector of Campbell memorabilia already has the replica of Donald Campbell’s 1967 K7 Hydroplane which was used in the BBC film “Across the Lake”. On show at the museum in the grounds of Holker Hall and Gardens is a reproduction of the Bluebird car in which Malcolm Campbell broke the Lands Speed record on Bonneville salt flats in 1935 at 301.13 mph. This was used by Robert Hardy in the BBC film “Speed Kings”

The original K4 boat driven by Malcolm Campbell took the water speed record on Lake Coniston in the Lake District in 1939. When being driven by son Donald on Lake Coniston in 1951 K4 hit a submerged object and sank. It was salvaged and stripped of all useful parts and burned.
