The evolution of the 99

In the first year the 99 appeared with an 1,709cc 4 cylinder engine (Triumph-type) and a four-speed gearbox. Front wheel drive , front and rear disc brakes , coil springs and automatic driving lights were most notable characteristics. A special feature surely was the position of the starter switch in the console between the front seats. Another unusual thing was the handbrake acting on the front wheels... To get a longer load platform the rear seats were convertible.

In the first year, the 99 appeared in the colours: white, green, blue black , red, and light tan, in 1970 the colour savanna beige was added. The two door version was standard until February 1970 when Saab introduced the first four door body in the history of Saab automobiles. The 99 now was also available in an automatic version.

In 1971 the 99 appeared in different new colours. The customers could now choose between the 1.7 litre and 1.85 litre carburettor engines. In the same year Saab introduced headlamp wipers as standard.

1972 brought news like self repairing, energy absorbing bumpers, electrically heated driving seat and a new „B-engine" , the 1.7 litre engine phased out. The „EMS" model was introduced as a two door version with electronic fuel injection , manual gearbox and special equipment. The new Swedish-made 2 litre engine was also presented this year.

In 1973 Saab was the first automobile company with side protection bars in the doors !

In 1974 Saab introduced the hatchback version also known as „Combi Coupé"

1976 saw the introduction of the 99 GLE with automatic gearbox, servo steering and 118 bhp engine in the EMS model.

In 1977 the sensational 99 Turbo was created that was available for customers at the end of the year as a 1978 model. New front and side reverse lamps and also larger tail lamps took place on certain 99s. Also worth mentioning was the preparation for radio installation at all models.

Until 1979 there were different improvements mostly details like sun visors, mirrors, interior... The GL version was now available with a sunroof and there also was a new gear lever on cars with manual transmission.

1980 brought out news like a 5 speed gearbox and seats and bumpers from the „900" model

In 1981 the new „H-engine" took place of the „B-engine" It was only available with single carburettor.

From 1981 to 1984, the last year of the „99" model there were changings like a new grill, 5 speed gearbox for the Nordic area, econometer in the tachometer, standard rear foglamps, asbestos-free brake linings, lower seats (1984) and breakerless electronic ignition (1984)
