Perched in its nest, looking as
though it has just arrived from Stratosphere?
When Bertone exhibited a prototype of a futuristic car with the engine of Lancia Fulvia 1600 HF fitted in the middle, few people expected it to be anything more than a concept car. The story goes that in 1971, when decision was made to replace the rally winning Lancia Fulvia 1600 HF, the design that was chosen to take over the throne was the one of the Bertone's prototype. The heir was christened by someone from the production who thought that it looked like i'ts just landed from the Stratosphere. So, at Turin Show in 1971 the car was officialy presented under the name of Stratos HF and it was powered by Ferrari Dino's engine and transmission. From then it followed a steep career path which took it to many victories, the most important ones being three World Rally Championships in 1974, 1975 and 1976. |
