Only 1,013 of these cars are believed to have been made to homologate in Group 4 class. Compared to the stock, the Abarth was generally made stronger, weight reduced by fitting fibreglass bonnet and boot lids while the doors were made of light alloy. The suspension was thoroughly revised, at the back independent with anti-roll bar. The interior was completely changed, lightweight recaro seats fitted, aluminium dashboard went in instead of the wooden one and a six-point roll-over cage installed. The weight saving was quite dramatic, the rally car being some 320kg lighter at 940kg. The engine was rated at 128bhp against 118bhp for the standard car. The acceleration, surprisingly, remained similar taking 9.5 seconds to reach 60mph. |
