On a historical note it was the 1959 race which saw the entry
of a team of the new Austin Minis. After the first half-hour it
became clear that the little 10 inch wheels were not strong enough
to stand up to the cornering ability of the cars as the wheel
centres were cracking and allowing the wheels to part company
with the axles. A frantic telephone call to the Longbridge factory
resulted in a lorry load of new wheels arriving at the circuit
to keep the cars running. This was after every available spare
wheel from the competing cars and those in the spectators park
had been used up. Never have so many tyres been changed in such
a short time as on that race day.
So says racing does "improve the breed".
